The TDM was a motorcycle - model of the Japanese motorcycle manufacturer Yamaha . TDM stands for Twin Dual-Purpose Motorcycle ("two (cylinder) two-purpose motorcycle").
The predecessor model, especially on the engine side, was the Yamaha XTZ 750 Super Ténéré .
Model characteristics
The first model with the designation TDM 850 had the factory abbreviation 3VD and was produced from 1991 to 1995. It is equipped with a parallel twin that runs from the 4TX series in 1996 with a 270 ° crank offset. From 2001 Yamaha began to produce the TDM 900 (RN08) with a new aluminum frame and firmer chassis. It has been available with an anti-lock braking system and electronic immobilizer (RN11) (as standard in Germany) since 2005 . The RN18 (2007) is the last evolutionary stage of this machine type.
The model is a so-called all-rounder derived from an off-road motorcycle ( enduro ), i.e. both a travel motorcycle and a semi-faired road machine . Yamaha sold the TDM 850 as a sports tourer. From the 4TX onwards, the two-cylinder was provided with a crank pin offset of 270 ° instead of the original 360 °. This change helped the engine to sound like a V-engine, which, however, was strongly muffled again by the original exhaust system.
The TDM is generally considered to be well made and very reliable. The chassis and the seating position are comfortable and suitable for touring. The engine has a lot of torque and power, but was often criticized because of excessive load change reactions and - especially with the first 3VD model - because of high fuel consumption. Starting with the 4TX model, the load change reactions have decreased, and fuel consumption is generally considered to be economical in comparison with other sports touring machines.
TDM 850 (3VD)
The Yamaha TDM850 (3VD) was built from 1991 to 1995.
It has a four-stroke parallel twin engine with water cooling. The engine has a displacement of 849 cm³, five valves per cylinder and a compression of 9.2: 1. The mixture is prepared in an equal pressure double carburetor. The engine has a contactless ignition system and dry sump lubrication. The motorcycle has a gearbox with 5 gears and an oil bath clutch operated by a Bowden cable. The maximum output is 57 kW (77 hp ) at 7,500 rpm . The engine reaches its maximum torque of 75.5 Nm at a speed of 6,000 rpm.
The motorcycle has an empty weight of 230 kg , the gross vehicle weight is 435 kg. The tank holds 18 liters, of which three liters are in reserve. The 3VD consumes 4.5 to 7 l / 100 km regular gasoline. The acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h is 4.3 seconds. The top speed is over 201 km / h, even with a pillion passenger. The type 3VD has double disc brakes at the front, the rear brake only has a single disc.
TDM 850 (4TX)
The Yamaha TDM850 (4TX) was built from 1996 to 2001.
The compression was increased to 10.5: 1 and the output increased to 61 kW (82 hp). The crankshaft was changed to 270 ° crank pin offset in order to get closer to a better engine sound - similar to a real V2 engine. Externally, the front paneling changed, the lamp was integrated into the mask. The tank capacity was increased to 20 l, the gearbox was stepped closer, the fuel consumption was reduced and the often criticized load change reactions were reduced for the first time (as in the subsequent models).
TDM 900 (RN08)
In 2002 the TDM850 was replaced by the TDM900. The most important differences are the more powerful engine with 6-speed gearbox and a new half fairing.
The machine received an injection system and exhaust gas purification using a secondary air system and a regulated catalytic converter. The chassis was also new: the frame is made of aluminum and is 29 percent lighter. The wheels and tires have also been changed: The TDM 900 rolls on wider and lighter three-spoke wheels, 120 mm front tires and 160 mm rear tires. Another innovation was the 43 mm telescopic fork. The one-piece brake calipers also offer an advantage; the operating forces are significantly lower than with the TDM 850. It is delivered in the colors reddish yellow cocktail, silver and dark blue metallic.
TDM 900 A (RN11)
From 2005 there was the TDM with an optional anti-lock braking system; the 2004 RN11 has no ABS. The RN11 from 2004 looks the same as the RN08, new changes in the fork and the engine control have been revised. The RN11 will come with a black frame from 2005, in Germany only with ABS and an immobilizer.
TDM 900 A (RN18)
The TDM900A (RN18) has a liquid-cooled two - cylinder engine with a displacement of 897 cm³. The four-stroke engine generates a nominal output of 63.4 kW (86 hp) at 7500 rpm and a maximum torque of 88.8 Nm at 6000 rpm. It is ignited with a digital transistor ignition system. Since the 2007 model, the motorcycle has a three-way catalytic converter that meets the Euro 3 emissions standard (previously Euro 2). An immobilizer and ABS are optionally available - the latter as standard in Germany.
The motorcycle weighs 226 kg empty and has a gross vehicle weight of 424 kg. The tank holds 20 l, of which 3.5 l reserve. The RN 18 consumes 4.5 to 7 l / 100 km of unleaded regular gasoline. The machine reaches a top speed of 210 km / h.
