The Yamaha TR was a racing motorcycle from the Japanese manufacturer Yamaha , which was used by private riders in the motorcycle world championship from 1969 to 1972 . The racing motorcycle was the first production racer from Yamaha with a displacement of 350 cc.

The Finn Jarno Saarinen was runner-up in the class up to 350 cm³ with a TR-Production-Racer in 1971 and 1972 and also won the Mallory Park Race of the Year in 1972 . Two coupled motors of the TR model series were the drive for Don Vesco's Big Red , with which he set a new world speed record for motorcycles on September 17, 1970 with 405.250 km / h .

History and technology

The air-cooled Yamaha TD models with a displacement of 250 cm³ had already been available for private drivers since 1962 and were extremely successful. After the regulations for the 1970 season were revised and only two-cylinder engines were allowed, Yamaha promised sales success for the higher displacement class as well. The design of the engine with horizontally divisible crankcase corresponded to the tried and tested smaller TD engine with two 34 mm Mikuni carburettors (but 64 instead of 54 mm bore). Due to the desired identical construction and the cost-saving factor, it was possible for private drivers to start in two classes. Three quarters of all drivers did this.

A five-speed transmission (the TR 3 had six gears) was used to transmit the power to the rear wheel via a chain. The chassis consisted of a double-loop tubular frame with a telescopic fork and two spring struts on the rear swing arm . The tire size was 3.0-18 and braking was carried out with a duo-duplex brake on the front wheel and a duplex brake on the rear wheel.

As a successor model, the water-cooled Yamaha TZ 350 was presented at the end of 1972 .
