The XT 550 is a motorcycle offered by the Japanese manufacturer Yamaha between 1982 and 1984 .

The predecessor of the Enduro was the Yamaha XT 500 , its successor the Yamaha XT 600 . In contrast to the Yamaha XT 500, however, it had an electronic ignition, four-valve cylinder head, register carburetor, balance shaft and a cantilever swing arm with a central spring strut under the tank like the Yamaha XT 250, as well as a 12 V electrical system and was therefore much more modern. In addition, it was about 10 kg lighter. Inherited from the Yamaha XT 500, it still had the weak half-hub drum brakes. However, due to its continued popularity, the XT 500 was built until 1989, so it outlived the better, not particularly successful XT 550 by five years.

The engine construction of the XT 550 lived on for a long time in the Yamaha XT 600 , Yamaha XT 600 Tenere , the Yamaha TT 600 , the Yamaha SRX 600 and, with water cooling, also to a certain extent in the Yamaha XTZ 660 , the Yamaha SZR . The XT-550 engine was also the starting point for various smaller manufacturers of MotoCross and off-road motorcycles as well as sidecars.
