Yamaha XJ 550

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The XJ 550 was brought onto the German market by Yamaha in 1981 to round off the sporty XJ series as the smallest model .

In contrast to its big sisters, it had a chain drive and a six-speed gearbox instead of the cardan. It was available in the colors red and black. Compared to the Yamaha XJ 650 , it was built much more delicate and 30 kilograms lighter. The seat height was also lower, which made the XJ 550 particularly interesting for beginners and those returning to the sport. Nevertheless, it was a popular driving school machine. Because of its lower weight, it was hardly behind its big 650 sister in terms of driving dynamics, as it had to struggle with its long final transmission. Since the sales success fell short of expectations and 600 cc engines also became fashionable, the XJ 550, together with the XJ 650, was replaced by the Yamaha XJ 600 from 1984 onwards . In Austria at the same time a technically closely related version, the XJ 500 (for tax and insurance reasons) with 499 cm³ and 54 hp (chassis number 5N4) was sold.
