The Yamaha Aerox from the manufacturer Yamaha Motor Corporation is one of the best-selling scooters in Germany and has been manufactured since 1997.

The first generation of the Aerox was completely identical to the MBK Nitro, since the second the scooter has only been sold under the Yamaha brand. MBK is the French subsidiary of Yamaha and produces the Aerox in Saint-Quentin , France . The Aerox models include a lying, water-cooled 50-cm³- cylinder - two-stroke engine of the brand Minarelli equipped, alternatively, a 100 cc model was initially available.

Since 2018, the scooter has only been available as a four-stroke model due to the Euro 4 emissions regulation .

First generation (1997-2013)

The first generation (YQ50) of the Aerox existed from 1997 to 2013, with slight changes in 2003 and 2008, as well as a few different special models. The rated output of the 50 cm³ model is 2.72 hp. In addition, when buying a new Yamaha Aerox, a free moped or a so-called power-up kit was initially offered, the assembly of which was not free of charge. In addition, a TÜV approval had to be carried out after assembly. The individual kits either throttled the engine to 25 km / h or optimized the power to 4.62 hp.

The vario rollers have the dimensions 15 × 12 mm, and the coupling has a diameter of 107 mm. It has a dry weight (empty weight without petrol and oil) of 92 kg, has a tank volume of 7 l and is started with an electric or kick starter.

According to the manufacturer, the Aerox consumes around 3.5 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. A test of the identical MBK Nitro in the naked version (without handlebar cover) consumed an average of 3.6 liters. The tank holds 7 liters.

The machine is lubricated separately from a separate oil tank. The scooter is filled with unleaded regular petrol ( RON  91) and lubricated with 2-stroke engine oil (JASO grade "FC" or ISO grade "EG-C" or "EG-D").

A telescopic fork from the Italian supplier Paioli with a spring travel of 80 mm is mounted at the front . At the rear, a single spring strut on the left side (attached to the top of the engine block ) with a spring deflection of 60 mm is used for shock absorption.

The braking system (from the Italian supplier Brembo ), in conjunction with the low proportion of negative profile of the Pirelli tires, enables good braking deceleration on dry, paved roads . The front and rear brakes are designed as disc brakes .

Yamaha also offered the Aerox R as a “Race Replica” special edition. This model should be based on the machines of the Yamaha MotoGP team. It had a different paint job and different stickers, a tachometer and a sport shock absorber, which was also available in the Yamaha accessories shop for normal models.

Second generation (2013-present)

Since 2013, Yamaha has offered the Aerox with a completely revised design as the Aerox R 50 (NS50) with standard handlebars and Aerox R 50 Naked (NS50N) with downhill handlebars. In addition to a completely new paneling, the inner structure of the scooter has also been revised, so that only the basic drive from the previous model has been taken over. The new digital speedometer and the larger seat are particularly noticeable compared to the previous model. The second generation of the scooter is also being offered for the first time with a 2- and 4-stroke engine.

Due to the Euro-4 emission control, the Yamaha Aerox has only been offered with a 4-stroke engine under the name Aerox 4 since the 2018 model year. With this change, the Aerox Naked was also discontinued, which means that the scooter is only available with standard handlebars.

Aerox 155 (Southeast Asia)

Since 2016, Yamaha has offered several models in Southeast Asia under the Aerox name. In the beginning, Yamaha tried to market a water-cooled 125cc scooter under the name Aerox 125 LC in Indonesia, but it was discontinued 10 months later due to little interest. Based on this model, Yamaha subsequently introduced the Aerox 155 with a more powerful 155cc engine in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam, which has been successfully sold since then. The Aerox 155 often takes the place of other previously discontinued Yamaha scooters, which means that the Yamaha portfolio is more standardized in the various countries.
