The Yamaha DT 80 LC is an all-terrain light motorcycle in the Enduro category from the Japanese vehicle manufacturer Yamaha . The type designation DT stands for dirt track , the number indicates the displacement in cm³, the suffix LC means Liquid Cooled ( German liquid-cooled ).
history
The development of the Enduro can be traced back to the "DT 1", the production of which the company started in 1967. The single-cylinder two-stroke gasoline engine is characteristic of the DT models that have been manufactured over the years in displacement versions from 50 to 400 cm³ . The Yamaha DT 80 has not been sold in Germany since 1997, because from this year you were 16 years old and allowed to drive 125 cc motorcycles. Production in other countries was also discontinued.
technology
engine
The power is generated by a liquid-cooled single - cylinder engine from Minarelli . The displacement of the two-stroke engine is 79 cm³ in order to comply with the performance restrictions imposed by the driver's license and driver's license, driving license class 1b . It was originally a 49 cm³ engine, the cylinder bore of which was enlarged to 49 mm in diameter. The original engine was installed in the DT 50 LC, for example, which is not available in Germany. The two-stroke engine already had separate lubrication , which was still unusual for two-wheelers in this performance class in the 1980s. The nominal power is 9.5 PS (LC) or 9.9 PS (LC2). The ignition is carried out by a capacitor discharge ignition . The carburetor comes from Mikuni and has the type designation VM18SS (LC) or VM20SS (LC2). The engine is only started using a kick starter .
drive
The power is converted by a 6-speed gearbox, the power separation by a multi-disc oil bath clutch and the secondary drive by a chain drive with a 15-tooth sprocket and a 48 or a 51-tooth chainring (depending on the model).
landing gear
The engine is supported by a tubular frame . The front tire is guided over a telescopic fork with 230 mm suspension travel, the rear wheel via a double swing arm with central spring strut and 200 mm suspension travel.
Compared to the 125, the Yamaha DT 80 is a light-weight enduro due to its 108 or 110 kg. The DT 80 can also be used off-road thanks to the studded tires, the long spring travel and the low weight.
The LC1 has drum brakes on the front and rear axles . The LC2, on the other hand, has a disc brake on the front axle and a drum brake on the rear axle.

Until 1997 the DT 80 LC / 2 was available in the color combinations black-purple, black-red, red-white, white-red, blue-yellow, black-turquoise, white-pink and white (Spanish version).
Production sites
The DT 80 LC was built in Japan and Brazil. The DTs from Brazilian production have the type designation 53VA, while the Japanese ones are designated 53V. There are no known technical differences between the production locations. As a special feature, there was also a version of the DT 80 LC2 sold in Spain, which has a smaller cylinder with 72 cm³ and modified timing. Other special features of the Spanish special model are a performance-enhancing manifold, a two-piston brake system from Brembo on the front wheel, and a tank cover on the left side.
Conversion to over 80 km / h and legal performance increase
Since the insurance premiums for light motorcycles up to 80 km / h are very high, there are two legal options to bring the DT80LC over 80 km / h and thus to a more favorable insurance classification:
- Thanks to a certificate from Yamaha, a pinion with 16 teeth can be installed, which increases the top speed to 92 km / h.
- By installing the Malossi tuning cylinder with 108 cm³ together with a pinion with 17 teeth, the power can be increased to 14 hp and the top speed to 90 km / h and can also be entered in the vehicle documents by means of an expert opinion.
