  • The number of rated runs was calculated with an even number of races held by halving this number and then adding one. For example, out of six races, four went into the championship ranking.
  • If an odd number of races was held, the number of runs was added by one and then halved. For example, four of the seven races counted.

useful information

  • The 250 cc run for the GDR Grand Prix led to a scandal. Dieter Braun from Germany won the race after an exciting fight against Phil Read and Rodney Gould and was cheered frenetically by the 150,000 spectators. During the race, the race director Hans Zacharias was asked by the GDR officials to take Braun out of the race with the black flag because they wanted to prevent the FRG national anthem from being played. Zacharias did not comply with this request and then lost his position as race director. The anthem of West Germany was played at the start and finish, but could not be heard over the course loudspeakers. As a consequence, from 1973 the GDR Grand Prix was only advertised for drivers from the Eastern Bloc and thereby lost its World Cup status.

Deaths

  • The Scot Maurice Jeffery died on June 12th in an accident on the first lap of the Senior TT race . He had lost control of his Norton Manx in the Rhencullen section and hit a wall.
  • Christian Ravel from France crashed on July 4th in the 500 cm³ run in Belgium in the Blanchimont curve at approx. 240 km / h, he died in hospital on the same day.
  • The MZ pilot Günter Bartusch from the GDR was killed on July 9 when he fell while training the 350 cm³ class at the GDR Grand Prix.
