1955 season>

The 1954 motorcycle world championship season was the sixth in the history of the FIM - motorcycle road world championship .

Were in the 500 cc class eight, cc in the class up to 350 cc nine in the class up to 250 cc and seven in the class to 125 and in the sidecars held six races.

Distribution of points

Scoring
space 1 2 3 4th 5 6th
Points 8th 6th 4th 3 2 1

If fewer than eight races were held, the best four results were included in the ranking; if eight or more races were staged, the five best results achieved were included in the World Championship ranking.

useful information

  • The 500 cm³ run at the Ulster Grand Prix had to be reduced from 27 to 15 laps due to bad weather and thus no longer met the requirements of the FIM, which is why it was not included in the World Championship ranking. Ray Amm won the race ahead of Rod Coleman and Gordon Laing .
  • Since the two manufacturers Norton and BMW had the same number of points, victories and all other placements in the constructors' championship of the sidecar class , the constructors' world champion was determined by adding up all the racing times of the manufacturers' best duos at the individual Grands Prix. The English brand Norton had a lead of 1: 32.8 minutes on BMW and was awarded the title.

Deaths

  • On July 4, 1954, the Australian Gordon Laing had an accident in the 350 cc race of the Belgian Grand Prix and succumbed to serious injuries.
  • The Austrian Rupert Hollaus was killed in an accident in 125 cm³ training for the Nations Grand Prix in Monza, after he was mathematically certain of the world title in this class. He became the first and so far only posthumous world champion in the history of the motorcycle world championship.
