Alfredo Milani

Alfredo Milani (born January 6, 1924 in Garbagnate Milanese , † November 30, 2017 ) was an Italian motorcycle racer .

Career

Alfredo Milani came from a motorsport-loving family. His older brother Albino was also a motorcycle racer and, as a Gilera works driver, became vice world champion in the sidecar class in 1952 together with Giuseppe Pizzocri behind Briton Cyril Smith . Brother Rossano took the place of the passenger in Albino's team for years in the 1950s. Together, the three operated in Milan a successful repair and restoration business for motorcycles .

Alfredo Milani made his debut in the motorcycle world championship with fourth place in the 500 cc race for the 1950s Grand Prix of Nations in Monza . The following season was the most successful in Milani's career. He contested five of the eight Grand Prix races held, won the French Grand Prix , which took place in Albi that year , as well as the Nations Grand Prix. In Belgium and the Netherlands , the Italian came second behind British Norton pilot Geoff Duke , and he finished fourth at the Ulster Grand Prix in Northern Ireland . In the overall standings, Milani took second place behind Duke and became vice world champion.

In the 1952 season, Milani did not contest a World Championship race. Instead, he focused on the Italian championship , which he won in the half-liter class that year. In 1953 Alfredo Milani, still starting for the manufacturer from Arcore , competed in three 500 Grand Prix. He won in Belgium, finished third in France and finished second in Switzerland . These placements helped him to third place in the World Championship behind his brand colleagues Geoff Duke and Reg Armstrong .

Between 1954 and 1957 Gilera had five more World Championship races in which he achieved two podium places. In 1964 Milani ended his active career.

Alfredo Milani died in autumn 2017 at the age of 93.
