useful information
The Brett-Liberati affair
At the start of the 500 cc race for the Belgian Grand Prix there was an ignition problem on the four-cylinder Moto Guzzi from Libero Liberati . The Gilera race director Roberto Pierso then asked the race management for permission to allow Liberati to start on Bob Brown's motorcycle . After consultation with the presidents of the CSI, they agreed and Liberati started with the starting number Browns. During the race, MV Agusta and Norton protested this decision. After Liberati had finished the race as the winner, he was therefore taken out of the ranking and Norton driver Jack Brett declared the winner. Now Gilera protested against the disqualification and achieved that it was revised in January 1958 and Libero Liberati was declared the winner again. However, this decision was no longer relevant for the World Cup ranking.
The end of an era
On September 26, 1957, the three Italian brands FB-Mondial , Gilera and Moto Guzzi announced their withdrawal from the motorcycle world championship. The reasons given were rising costs with a simultaneous decline in sales figures, the bad image of motorsport in Italy at the time and the driver's safety at risk due to the ever faster and more powerful machines. Most of the drivers affected were not informed of this directly, but learned the news from the media. The other two active Italian brands, MV Agusta and Ducati , on the other hand, underlined their intention to continue to compete in the world championship.
Deaths
- Roberto Colombo was killed on July 6, 1957 in an accident during training for the 350cc Belgian Grand Prix.
- Fritz Hillebrand had a fatal accident on August 24, 1957 in a minor race on the Deusto-San Ignacio street circuit in Bilbao, Spain. Manfred Grunwald was seriously injured and then retired from racing, as the duo had already been established as world champions, Hillebrand posthumously won the title.
- The German sidecar driver Josef Knebel died in an accident in the race for the Dutch Grand Prix.
