Carlo Ubbiali (born September 22, 1929 in Bergamo , Italy ; † June 2, 2020 there ) was an Italian motorcycle racer and nine-time world champion in the motorcycle world championship . In the 1950s it was very dominant, especially in the smaller classes.

Career

Carlo Ubbiali began his career in the 1949 season in the newly created motorcycle world championship . At the end of the season he finished fourth overall in the 125 cc class with his FB Mondial . That year he also won the gold medal at the International Six-Day Race .

In the 1951 season Ubbiali won his first world championship on Mondial in the 125 cc class . After he lost his World Championship crown to the Briton Cecil Sandford the following year , he moved to MV Agusta .

In the following years, the Italian became a legend in motorcycle racing, he won a total of five 125 cc world championships and four titles in the 250 cc class by 1960 . In 1956 , 1959 and 1960 he was even able to win the world title in the 125 cc class and the 250 cc class in one season.

Carlo Ubbiali made hardly any mistakes in his entire career and did not have a single serious fall in the World Cup in twelve years.

He ended his active career at the age of 30 and was considered Italy's best motorcycle racer before Giacomo Agostini appeared. With nine world championships he has won, he is in third place with Mike Hailwood and Valentino Rossi , only surpassed by Giacomo Agostini and Ángel Nieto .

Ubbiali died on June 2nd, 2020 at the age of 90 in Bergamo. Before his death, he was the last living rider from the founding season of the motorcycle world championship in 1949.
