Johann Zarco (born July 16, 1990 in Cannes , France ) is a French motorcycle racer and two-time world champion in the Moto2 class.
Career
Zarco began his racing career on so-called pocket bikes . In 2003 he met his manager Laurent Fellon. Through him he got the opportunity to take part in championships all over Europe .
In his first season in 2004, he finished fourth overall. A year later he was runner-up in the junior category. In 2006 Zarco confirmed his performance and was runner-up in the senior category. In 2007 he started in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup . He finished the season with seven podiums in eight races (including four wins) as champion. Zarco is the only Frenchman to date to win this championship.
Because of this success, he joined the “Red Bull MotoGP Academy” in 2008 to compete in the Spanish 125 cc championship . Zarco left this during the season. He accepted an invitation from the Gabrielli team for the Italian 125 cc championship and competed in the races in Vallelunga on an Aprilia GP. Zarco won both runs.
Motorcycle world championship
125 cc / Moto3 class
In 2009 Johann Zarco started his first season in the motorcycle world championship . He was part of the WTR San Marino team on an Aprilia. He stayed with this team in the 2010 season . In 2011 , Zarco switched to Aki Ajo's team , who had become world champion with Marc Márquez a year earlier , and rode a Derbi . He started the season with sixth place in the Qatar Grand Prix , followed by his first podium at the Spanish Grand Prix , which he repeated at the Portuguese Grand Prix . After finishing fifth in France , he crossed the finish line first in Catalonia , but was only classified sixth due to a penalty for an unfair maneuver against the Spaniard Nicolás Terol . At the Grand Prix of Great Britain he achieved his best result to date, finishing second behind Jonas Folger . Zarco took his first pole position in Italy and, after being in the lead for a long time, finished second behind Terol in the race. At the following German Grand Prix he crossed the finish line at the same time as Héctor Faubel , but since Faubel had set the fastest lap, this was considered the winner. At the Czech Grand Prix he made a mistake while in the lead in the last corner, so that Sandro Cortese won the race. At the San Marino Grand Prix, too , Zarco was in the lead for almost the entire race, but was overtaken by Terol after the last corner. Finally, he achieved his first Grand Prix victory at the Japanese Grand Prix in Motegi . At the end of the season he was runner-up in the eight-liter class with 262 points behind Nicolás Terol .
Moto2 class
In 2012 Zarco switched to the Moto2 class and drove for the JIR Moto2 team. At the end of the season he finished tenth overall with 94 points. In 2013 he got his first podium in the Moto2 class on a Suter with two third places in the Iodaracing team . The 2014 season went Zarco in AirAsia Caterham team. That year he achieved four third places and his first pole position in the Moto2 class.
Back in Aki Ajo's team, Zarco rides a Kalex in 2015 . Since the only remaining competitor Esteve Rabat could not take part in the race of the Japanese Grand Prix due to an injury, Zarco became world champion in the Moto2 class for the first time in his career. With 352 points at the end of the season, he also set a new record in this class.
In 2016 , Zarco stayed with Ajo Motorsport and won the second last race of the season to win the Moto2 class for the second time. He is the first in the history of this class to win the world title twice.
MotoGP class
Since the season 2017 he drives in the MotoGP class and was twice sixth in the World Cup, both times for the tech 3 - Yamaha team. 2019 he moved to KTM - factory team . At the end of 2019 , his contract was terminated. Brad Binder took his place. In 2020 Zarco moved to the Avintia - Ducati team. His teammate is Esteve Rabat . At the Czech Grand Prix , Zarco drove from pole position to third place, which is the first podium for his team in the ninth season in the premier class.
