Beginnings until 2009
In 2003 the Austrian manufacturer KTM entered the 125 cc class of the motorcycle world championship with Red Bull as the main sponsor. Roberto Locatelli and the then reigning world champion Arnaud Vincent were hired as drivers, but who left the team in the middle of the season after poor performance and was replaced by the Finn Mika Kallio . Kallio took the team's first podium at the Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang .
For the 2004 season , the later MotoGP world champion Casey Stoner was signed on the side of Kallio. Stoner was able to secure the first victory for KTM at the Malaysian Grand Prix, he finished the season with a total of six podium finishes in 5th place in the World Championship. Furthermore, the Austrian Michael Ranseder drove a wildcard in two races in the Red Bull KTM Junior Team .
After Casey Stoner left in 2005 , the team started with Gábor Talmácsi , Mika Kallio and Julián Simón . This season has been the most successful for the team to date, all three drivers celebrated victories, Kallio and Talmácsi finished the season in second and third place respectively. The Australian Anthony West competes for the team in the 250 cm³ class and was able to achieve the first podium at the British Grand Prix in second place for KTM in the middle class of the motorcycle world championship.
In 2006 Talmácsi was made responsible for Mika Kallio's missed world title in 2005 and dismissed, Kallio and Simón continued to drive for the team. In the end, Kallio was 76 points behind Alvaro Bautista and ten podium positions and four pole positions, once again vice world champion in the 125 cc class. The Swiss Randy Krummenacher replaced Julián Simón for two races during the season. In the 250 cc class, Hiroshi Aoyama and Manuel Poggiali drove for the team. Aoyama was fourth overall with 193 points.
In 2007 Mika Kallio rose with the team in the 250 cc class and became Aoyama's teammate. They finished their season in seventh and sixth place respectively. In the 125 cc class, Randy Krummenacher, Stevie Bonsey and Tomoyoshi Koyama started, the best driver was Koyama, who achieved 3rd place in the overall standings.
In the 2008 season , Krummenacher continued to compete in the 125 cc class. During the season he was represented in three races by the German Jonas Folger . Nevertheless, he could not celebrate any successes and was only 25th in the overall standings. In the middle class, Kallio came third with three wins.
After the end of the 2008 season, KTM withdrew from the 250 cc class and in 2009 only drove in the smallest class with drivers Cameron Beaubier and Marc Márquez . At the end of the season, KTM announced that they were withdrawing from the motorcycle world championship for economic reasons.
New start in Moto3 with Aki Ajo
In 2012 , after three years, KTM returned to the newly founded Moto3 class as a manufacturer. Aki Ajo was signed as team manager, and the team started the season with drivers Sandro Cortese , Danny Kent and Artur Sissis . The motorcycle during the season is the KTM RC250GP . Cortese celebrated the team's first driver title since joining the 2003 World Cup.
For the 2013 season , the Spaniard and last year's World Cup runner-up Luis Salom was signed for Cortese, who had been promoted to Moto2. As a team-mate of Arthur Sissis and Zulfahmi Khairuddin, he was third in the overall standings after a hard-fought season behind his compatriots Maverick Viñales and Álex Rins .
In 2014 , after Salom's departure from Moto2, Australian Jack Miller started alongside Red Bull Rookies Cup Champion Karel Hanika for the team. Even after his opening win in Qatar , Miller was considered one of the title contenders for the season, he finished the year with a total of six race wins and was only two points behind the Spaniard Álex Márquez, vice world champion in the Moto3 class. Hanika reached 18th place in the drivers' championship with only 44 points.
In the 2015 season , Brad Binder , Miguel Oliveira and Karel Hanika were again three drivers for the team. At the end of the season Oliviera was runner-up behind Danny Kent with six race wins . The second best driver of the season was Brad Binder, who made a name for himself with a second and three third places. He finished the season on the 6th World Cup place. Hanika was only able to achieve 18th place in the overall ranking.
In 2016 , Karel Hanika was fired for poor performance and replaced with Bo Bendsneyder , the reigning champion of the Red Bull Rookies Cup 2015 . Binder was still part of the team and was a candidate for the title early on. In the end, he dominated the entire season and was already world champion in the Moto3 class in the fifth last race, the Grand Prix of Aragon .
In 2014, Stefan Pierer , the CEO of KTM-AG announced that KTM was planning to enter the MotoGP class of the motorcycle world championship in 2017. Just 15 months after the announcement, the official rollout of the motorcycle, the KTM RC16 , took place at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg in autumn 2015 . The test rider was former German MotoGP rider Alex Hofmann . After further tests with the riders Mika Kallio, Tom Lüthi and Karel Abraham , the motorcycle was officially presented to the public in 2016 as part of the Austrian Grand Prix . KTM also announced that it would start with long-time KTM rider Mika Kallio with a wildcard at the season finale, the Valencia Grand Prix. The drivers of the Red Bull KTM team in the MotoGP class will be the current Tech 3 Yamaha drivers Pol Espargaró and Bradley Smith from 2017 . A team with team manager Aki Ajo, consisting of Brad Binder and Miguel Oliviera, will also be at the start in the Moto2 class.
