Gábor Talmácsi (born May 28, 1981 in Budapest ) is a former Hungarian motorcycle racer .

Talmácsi, known as “Talma”, won the world title in the 125 cc class of the motorcycle world championship on Aprilia for the Bancaja Aspar team in the 2007 season . His younger brother Gergő is also a motorcycle racer.

Career

Gábor Talmácsi started riding a mini bike at the age of four . Later he was successful in the European motorcycle championship .

The Hungarian made his debut at the Czech Grand Prix in 2000 in the 125 cm³ class as a wildcard pilot in the motorcycle world championship .

In the 2001 season Talmácsi was a regular driver in the private Racing Service team , where he drove a 125cc Honda . After a difficult start to the season, he continued to improve and finally achieved 18th place in the World Championship with 34 points. His best result was sixth place at the Pacific Grand Prix in Motegi, Japan .

His strong performances brought Gábor Talmácsi a contract with Italjet for the following season . However , he couldn't score a single point for the Italian manufacturer in the first races, so he left the team after five world championship races and started the rest of the season for the German team PEV Moto ADAC Sachsen , where he drove a Honda again. At the Brazilian Grand Prix of Hungary achieved his best result of the season with fourth place. With 20 points he reached 22nd place overall.

For the 2003 season, Talmácsi switched to the Exalt Cycle team, in which the French Arnaud Vincent had won the world title last year. There he didn’t feel comfortable there, however, because he believed that his German team-mate Steve Jenkner was getting better material than him. At the end of the season Talmácsi finished 14th overall.

Since Gábor Talmácsi number 1 driver wanted to be, he moved in 2004 into Malaguti - factory team . However, the bike turned out to be non-competitive. With seventh place in Portugal as the best result, he reached 17th place in the World Cup. Still, it attracted the interest of several teams, including Derbi , Gilera , Honda and KTM .

For the 2005 season , Talmácsi decided on the offer of the Austrian Red Bull KTM factory team. There he made his final breakthrough during the season. At the Italian Grand Prix in Mugello he celebrated his first Grand Prix victory. Two more successes followed, in the Netherlands and in Qatar . When he won in Qatar, the fourth last race of the year, he overtook his team-mate Mika Kallio shortly before the checkered flag , contrary to the stable order from team boss Harald Bartol . After the race, Talmácsi stated that he had thought the two were only on the penultimate lap. When Kallio at the end of the season in the title decision with five points behind the Swiss Thomas Lüthi was left behind , Gábor Talmácsi was made a scapegoat and dismissed. In the World Cup, he finished third.

Talmácsi was originally planned for 2006 to pilot the new 250 cc KTM. After his release, however, he switched to the Humangest Racing Team , where he took part in the 125cc World Championship on a Honda factory machine. After Lüthi's title win in 2005, however, development at Honda almost came to a standstill, which is why the Japanese manufacturer is lagging behind its competitor Aprilia . Talmácsi finally finished seventh as the best Honda driver. His best result of the season was third place in the Czech Republic.

For the 2007 season, Gábor Talmácsi moved to Jorge Martínez's Spanish Bancaja Aspar team , in which Álvaro Bautista was able to secure the 125 World Championship title in 2006. The Hungarian felt at home straight away, already showed strong performances in the pre-season tests and started the season well. Although he did not drive the latest model of the 125cc Aprilia like his teammates Héctor Faubel and Sergio Gadea , Talmácsi secured the world title with three wins and ten podium positions ahead of Faubel after an exciting finale in Valencia .

In 2008 Talmácsi, again in the Aspar team, will try to defend his 125cc world title.

In 2009 he drove first for the Balatonring Racing Team and switched to the MotoGP class in the middle of the season , first at the side of Yūki Takahashi for two races and since then as the only driver of the Scot Honda Team.

In the 2012 season , Gábor Talmácsi competed in the Supersport World Championship on Honda .
