The 2016 motorcycle world championship season was the 68th in the history of the FIM - motorcycle road world championship .
18 races were held in all classes.
Distribution of points
The world champion will be the driver or manufacturer who has accumulated the most points in the world championship by the end of the season. When distributing points, the placements are taken into account in the overall result of the respective race. The top fifteen drivers in each race receive points according to the following scheme:

- The Indianapolis Grand Prix, which has been held since 2008 , is no longer on the racing calendar.
- A new addition is the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring . A Grand Prix was last driven here in 1997 .
- After Bridgestone was the tire supplier from 2009 to 2015 , Michelin is now the sole supplier.

Rules changes (MotoGP)
- The open format introduced in the 2014 season in the MotoGP category will be canceled. So there is only one class in which all manufacturers and teams start.
Which means that now all teams have to use the Magneti Marelli unit control unit ( ECU ) . - All manufacturers / teams are allowed to use a maximum of seven engines per season.
- A maximum of 22 liters of petrol may be used per Grand Prix .
- The minimum weight of the motorcycle drops from 158 kg to 157 kg.
- The open format introduced in the 2014 season in the MotoGP category will be canceled. So there is only one class in which all manufacturers and teams start.
- After Luis Salom's fall , changes were made to the track layout at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya . From the third free practice, the Formula 1 layout was used. This includes an additional chicane before the last corner.
- For safety reasons, the track width of the last corner (corner 10) on the Red Bull Ring was reduced from 13 to 10 meters. This was decided after test drives in July.
Teams
- With Jonas Folger's victory at the Czech Grand Prix , seven races before the end of the season, Kalex became the Constructors' World Champion in the Moto2 class .
- The race day for the San Marino Grand Prix fell on September 11th. The Forward Team (Moto2) drove with a special paint on that day to commemorate the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 .
- At the Valencia Grand Prix , Aprilia Racing Team Gresini competed with a special paint job in the Product Red design .

MotoGP
- Danilo Petrucci did not take part in qualifying and the race in Qatar due to several fractures of the metacarpal bone in his right hand . He contracted this injury during pre-season test drives in Phillip Island, Australia . Petrucci was also unable to start in Argentina , Texas and Spain . His compatriot Michele Pirro replaced him in these races.
- Jack Miller suffered a fracture in his right foot after falling in the first free practice session of the Texas Grand Prix . Because of this injury, he did not take part in qualifying and the race in Texas.
- Another fall of Miller occurred in the warm-up of the Austrian Grand Prix. In doing so, he contracted hairline cracks in the sixth vertebra and on his right wrist . For these reasons, he cannot drive the race the following afternoon and the one week later race in the Czech Republic . After Miller took part in free practice sessions and qualifying for the San Marino Grand Prix, he decided not to take part in the race on Sunday. Because the pain in my hand was still too great. - During test drives at the Red Bull Ring in Austria in July, the Finn Mika Kallio announced that he would start with a wildcard at the season finale in Valencia, Spain on the Circuit Ricardo Tormo . There he will drive the newly developed KTM RC16 , which will be used from the 2017 season .
- After the Briton Bradley Smith drove the 8-hour race in Suzuka this year, he wanted to start in the last race of the FIM Endurance World Championship in Oschersleben . In a fall in free practice for this event, however, he suffered such serious injuries that he cannot take part in the races in Great Britain, San Marino and Aragon. He is represented by his compatriot Alex Lowes .
- Andrea Iannone was unable to drive the Misano race. He fell in the first free practice of this Grand Prix and injured two vertebrae (Th3 & Th4). From the fourth free practice, test driver Michele Pirro was used as a replacement for Iannone. From the first to the third free practice session he was on the road with a wildcard. To test whether his injury has healed enough, Iannone completed the first free practice session at the Aragon Grand Prix. Since that was not the case, however, Michele Pirro came back as a substitute driver, this time from the second free practice. Iannone cannot drive the race in Japan because of his injury. In this race, Héctor Barberá will be his reserve driver. As a replacement for Barberá, the Australian Mike Jones will be used in the Avintia Racing team . Barberá and Jones will also be used as reserve drivers at the race in Australia .
- The Japanese Yamaha test rider Katsuyuki Nakasuga will start the Japanese Grand Prix with a wild card.
- Dani Pedrosa broke his right collarbone after a fall in the second free practice session of the Japanese Grand Prix . He will not be able to drive the further practice sessions and the race. He will be replaced by Hiroshi Aoyama from Japan . Pedrosa will not be able to drive the race in Australia either. Nicky Hayden will replace him in this race.

Moto2
- Efrén Vázquez crashed in qualifying for the Texas Grand Prix. He was flown to a hospital by helicopter . The very next day he left again. Vazquez fractured his right ankle and sprained a vertebra (Th12). The Spaniard was unable to take part in the race in Jerez and France due to this injury . At Le Mans he was represented by the American Danny Eslick .
- The JPMoto Malaysia team , in which Efrén Vázquez rode, has been renamed Petronas AHM Malaysia from the Catalan Grand Prix . In addition, the Malay Ramdan Rosli has been driving as a replacement for Vazquez since then . Furthermore, the change from Suter to Kalex was completed.
- Sandro Cortese will not take part in the race in France due to an injury to the posterior cruciate ligament of his right knee that he sustained in a fall in Jerez.
- The Spaniard Luis Salom crashed in the second free practice session in Catalonia. He was taken to a hospital in an ambulance and later succumbed to his injuries.
- The Tasca Racing Scuderia Moto2 team was not satisfied with the performance of Alessandro Tonucci and has replaced him with the Australian Remy Gardner from the Catalan Grand Prix .
- After a serious fall of the Swiss Thomas Lüthi in the qualification for the Grand Prix of the Czech Republic, in which he lost consciousness for a short time , he cannot take part in the race.
- Dominique Aegerter from Switzerland sustained injuries to his shoulder and ribs during motocross training before the British Grand Prix . He will therefore not be able to drive the race at Silverstone . He is represented by the Spaniard Iker Lecuona .
- Due to contractual matters, Dominique Aegerter will be replaced by Iker Lecuona from the Japanese Grand Prix until the end of the season.
- In the first free practice session for the Aragon Grand Prix, the Portuguese Miguel Oliveira suffered a concussion and a broken right collarbone after a collision and subsequent fall with the Italian Franco Morbidelli . For this reason, he cannot participate in further training sessions and the race.

- Philipp Öttl broke his spoke and ulna in a fall at Le Mans . In Mugello he was represented by the Italian Lorenzo Dalla Porta .
- Since the team of the Czech Karel Hanika was not satisfied with its performance, the Briton Danny Webb was signed as a substitute driver. Webb was used in the Netherlands and Germany. From Austria, Webb will be replaced by the Spaniard Marcos Ramírez .
- Due to an injury to the Spaniard Jorge Navarro , Lorenzo Dalla Porta will drive the race in Assen as his substitute.
- From the Austrian Grand Prix, the Spaniard Albert Arenas will replace the Frenchman Alexis Masbou in the Peugeot MC Saxoprint team . The team was not happy with Masbou's results.
- After qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix, Romano Fenati was suspended from his Sky Racing Team VR46 team . The team justified this measure with the fact that Fenati's behavior repeatedly did not comply with the team's disciplinary rules. From the British Grand Prix, Lorenzo Dalla Porta will take his place.
- With a second place at the Grand Prix of Aragon, the South African Brad Binder became world champion for the first time .
- The Scot John McPhee crashed in the sixth round of the Australian Grand Prix. He suffered a concussion, a fracture in his left thumb and a tear in his lung . Due to these injuries McPhee is at the Malaysian Grand Prix from the Malays Azmi Hafiq be represented.
