The KTM RC16 is a racing motorcycle from KTM and will be used from 2017 in the MotoGP class, the highest prototype category of the FIM - Motorcycle Road World Championship .

The RC16 uses a newly developed V4 engine, the same design as its competitor Aprilia , and different from the V2 engines of the KTM series models.

development

The motorcycle is developed in Mattighofen and Munderfing . After the engine was subjected to a test on the test bench in July 2015 , KTM completed its first so-called roll-out at the end of October 2015 . Test driver Alex Hofmann rode the motorcycle for three days at the Red Bull Ring in Austria .

Between November 2015 and June 2016 the machine was tested on the Spanish race tracks Circuit Ricardo Tormo and Circuito de Jerez , as well as in Italy on the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli and in the Czech Republic on the Automotodrom Brno . In addition to Alex Hofmann, the Finn Mika Kallio , the French Randy De Puniet and the Czech Karel Abraham were used as drivers . Test drives were held at the Red Bull Ring from July 19-20, 2016. This was the first time the KTM works team competed against some other MotoGP teams. Mika Kallio and Thomas Lüthi were used as drivers . The first racing simulation was carried out in private test drives in Misano at the end of August 2016.

presentation

KTM used the racing weekend for the Austrian Grand Prix as an opportunity to present the motorcycle to the public. The machine was unveiled on Saturday, August 13th, 2016. The design is in the colors of the main sponsor Red Bull and the KTM colors . On the following Sunday, the two test drivers Alex Hofmann and Mika Kallio drove a few demo laps on the Red Bull Ring.

technology

Like all other manufacturers in the MotoGP class, KTM has been using a so-called "seamless transmission" right from the start. This makes it possible to change gears without interrupting traction. As a chassis to chose a steel - tubular frame . The exhaust comes from the Slovenian manufacturer Akrapovič ; the damper elements are supplied by the Austrian company WP Suspension .

Races

2016

  • In the last race of the season in Valencia , Mika Kallio started with a wildcard . Kallio started the race from the 7th row on the grid from 20th place. After eleven laps he had to go into the pits due to a technical defect in the rear wheel sensor and give up the race.
