Karel Abraham (born January 2, 1990 in Brno ) is a former Czech motorcycle racer .

Abraham competed in the motorcycle world championship from 2005 to 2015 and from 2017 to 2019 . His father, Karel Abraham Sr., who owns the Brno circuit , which hosts the annual Czech Grand Prix , acted as sponsor. The AB Cardion team that Abraham drove for also belonged to his father.

Career

Abraham 2014 on a Honda at Le Mans

With the financial help of his father, Abraham got into the 125 cc class of the motorcycle world championship in 2005 ; could not get any world championship points with 15 starts on an Aprilia . In 2006 he got eight points and thus the 24th place in the overall standings. The following year , Abraham moved up to the 250 cc class and got 31 points and 16th place in the drivers' standings on an Aprilia. After two more years in the quarter-liter class, this was replaced by the Moto2 category in the 2010 season . Abraham started this year on FTR and took his first Grand Prix victory at the last race of the season, the Valencia Grand Prix at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo . Shortly before that, he had finished third behind Toni Elías and Julián Simón at the Japanese Grand Prix . With 96 points he was ranked tenth in the overall ranking.

In 2011 , Karel Abraham and his team switched to the MotoGP class. In his debut season he scored 64 points on a Ducati, making it 14th in the overall standings. He secured the same world championship position with 59 points the following year .

In 2013 Abraham continued to compete in the MotoGP class and competed at ART. During qualifying for the Texas Grand Prix , he fell after a collision with Bryan Staring and injured his shoulder. As a result, he was injured for two races. It was not until the French Grand Prix that Abraham took part in a race again and scored a world championship point. After the warm-up for the Indianapolis Grand Prix, Abraham decided against participating in the race because of his poor health.

For season 2016 joined Abraham in the Superbike World Championship . There he rides a BMW S 1000 RR for Team Milwaukee BMW . His teammate is Australian Joshua Brookes .

In 2017 the Czech returned to MotoGP, this time to Jorge Martínez 's Aspar team on a Ducati. With 32 points including a seventh place in the Dutch TT , which is his best MotoGP placement, he was 20 World Cup. In 2018 he only collected twelve points and was 23rd. In both years he was clearly defeated by his teammate Álvaro Bautista .

In 2019 Abraham moved to Avintia Racing after Aspar's MotoGP retirement . He finished the season in 24th with nine points. Originally he also had a contract for 2020, but was replaced by Johann Zarco shortly after the end of the 2019 season . The Czech then announced his retirement from racing.
