useful information
General
Rule changes
- All classes
- If a driver comes to the starting grid behind the safety car after the warm-up lap , he has to start the race from the pit lane .
- The penalty for excessive speed in the pit lane will be increased by € 50. In future, € 200 will have to be paid for the first violation. For each further violation, the amount of the penalty is determined by the race stewards.
- If a race is stopped after less than three completed laps, all drivers may participate in a possible restart. Even those who did not finish the inspection or warm-up lap at the first start.
- A second instance will be introduced with the so-called Appeal Stewards . You will be present at every Grand Prix and deal with all objections against the race stewards. This should lead to faster decisions, ideally during the race. Previously, appeals had to be submitted to the FIM appeals court. Where decision making took four days.
- After the Grand Prix of Qatar it was decided with immediate effect that the penalty points introduced for the 2013 season will be abolished. It was also determined that decisions by the Appeal Stewards , provided they confirm the decision of the Stewards , are final. Objections are therefore no longer allowed.
- After the Dutch TT , it was decided that wildcard drivers, like emergency drivers, would be included in the insurance of the IRTA ( drivers' association) with immediate effect . Before that, they had to take out insurance from their respective national association. It was also determined that from the 2018 season all teams in Moto3 and MotoGP must use a dashboard , which must be able to receive messages from the race management. There will be a fixed list of standard messages. It was also determined that there are teams that are already using such dashboards and that they are now allowed to use them as a so-called virtual pit board . For Moto2, this rule will only apply from the 2019 season
- Moto3 and Moto2
- For reasons of equal opportunities, not only the motorcycles of the first six riders will be equipped with cameras, but all other machines will also be given dummies with the same weight in the same place .
- Moto2
- The minimum weight of the motorcycles will be increased by 2 kg to 217 kg.
- MotoGP
Others
- On the day of qualifying for the Qatar Grand Prix, the weather conditions were too bad for the drivers to go out onto the track. Therefore, the qualification was canceled in all three classes and the starting grid for the races was determined on the basis of the combined timesheet from the free practice sessions held on the previous days.
- The MotoGP class race in Jerez was the 3000th Grand Prix in the history of the motorcycle world championship.
- After the first two free practice sessions at the Grand Prix of Catalonia , it was decided to go back to the layout from the previous year after Turn 13. Because the newly built chicane has too many bumps.
- The British Grand Prix was the 100th race in the history of the Moto3 class.
