Silverstone is a medium-sized village in Northamptonshire , England with a population of around 2000. It is roughly halfway between Northampton and Oxford . Silverstone is home to the world-famous race track , the Silverstone Circuit , where the first race of the first Formula 1 World Championship took place on May 13, 1950 . The British Grand Prix has taken place 51 times in Silverstone since then (as of 2018). The racetrack is located on the site of an old airfield about one kilometer south of the village. In the week before and during the race, a hustle and bustle replaces the otherwise quiet village atmosphere.

The Formula 1 team Racing Point , formerly Force India , is based in the immediate vicinity of the race track. The company employs 200 people in and around Silverstone. Eddie Jordan was previously the owner of the Formula 1 team located there.

In the Middle Ages, timber was primarily traded in Silverstone . Fish ponds in the north of the village supplied the residents. The village is listed in the Domesday Book .
