The Phillip Island Circuit is a motorsport racetrack on the island of Phillip Island on the coast of Bass Strait in the Australian state of Victoria , on the u. a. Races of the motorcycle world championship , the superbike world championship and the V8 supercars series are held.
The first race took place in 1926 with the first Australian Grand Prix, the so-called 100-mile race. At that time, the course was still a high-speed triangle on closed public roads. The track length for automobile races was about 6 miles, for motorcycles about 10 miles.
With increasing speeds and the demand for a safer route, the island's first pure racetrack was created, an unpaved hill-and-valley runway with tight curves near the airport. This route was used until 1935.
In 1951, a local businessman had a new track built two kilometers from the original runway. The only suitable and available piece of land was directly on the coast at the southwest end of the island. The location is responsible for the large differences in altitude along the route and the sometimes violent wind from the sea. The first race on the new track took place in 1956. Since there was no money for necessary repairs in 1962, the Phillip Island Circuit lost the races held on it to the Bathurst circuit .
The circuit reopened in 1966, but lost quality again during the 1970s due to poor maintenance and intensive use for test drives. In 1985 the track was sold and reopened in 1989 with the 500cc race of the Australian Grand Prix and a victory for Australian Wayne Gardner in front of 90,000 spectators. From 1991 to 1996 the course lost the motorcycle world championship at Eastern Creek near Sydney, but was able to bring it back in 1997.
Since 1990, the Superbike World Championship has been held on Phillip Island every year. The Australian Touring Car Championship , which was renamed the V8 Supercars Series in 1996 , has also been a guest on the island since 1993 .
