Phillip Island is an island in the Australian state of Victoria . It is located around 80 kilometers as the crow flies southeast of Melbourne's city ​​center and can be reached via a 640 meter long concrete bridge. The island reaches its greatest height in the southwest in Woolamai Hill near Cape Woolamai , which rises steeply to 109 meters. Phillip Island is in front of Western Port Bay . French Island is 4.7 kilometers northeast of Phillip Island in Western Port Bay.

Phillip Island is part of the Bass Coast Shire parish and consists essentially of three of the county's seven wards , namely Churchill, McHaffie and Thompson, plus a small portion of the Anderson wards .

3.5 million people visit the island every year, the largest part of which consists of the Phillip Island Nature Park with natural landscapes and rich fauna.

The most famous attraction is the so-called Penguin Parade . In the morning, whole groups of little penguins move together across the beach from their homes on the coast into the sea to catch fish for themselves and their young. In the evening they return to their buildings on the rocky coast. During the penguin migration times, many tourists come to the coast to watch this event.

On the island is the traditional circuit Phillip Iceland Circuit , on the u. a. the Australian Grand Prix for motorcycles is held annually as part of the Motorcycle World Championship and a run for the Superbike World Championship .

The island is named after Arthur Phillip , the first governor of New South Wales .

Personalities

Brothers Chris , Liam and Luke Hemsworth (born in Melbourne) grew up on the island . All three work as actors today, their parents still live on the island.
