French Island is an island in Western Port Bay 61 km south of Melbourne , Victoria (Australia) . Around 70 percent of the island's area of 170 km² belong to the French Island National Park .
The island occupies a large part of Western Port Bay and is 1.3 to 9.4 km from its coast. 4.7 km further south is Phillip Island . The highest point is Mount Wellington at 96 meters. French Island is sparsely populated. At the 2016 census, 119 people lived on the island. The main town is Tankerton in the southwest.
