Coordinates: 38 ° 37 ′ S , 145 ° 32 ′ E Bass Coast Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . The area is 865.5 km² and has about 33,000 inhabitants.
Bass Coast is located on the south coast of Victoria, south of the capital Melbourne . The LGA consists of a mainland bordered by Melbourne's Cardinia Shire to the north and South Gippsland Shire to the west, and Phillip Island connected by a bridge, and includes the following towns: Bass, Cape Paterson, Corinella, Cowes, Grantville, Inverloch, Kilcunda, Newhaven, Rhyll, San Remo and Wonthaggi. The seat of the City Council is in the 8000-inhabitant town of Wonthaggi in the south of the LGA.
As early as 1798, the explorer George Bass , after whom the Shire is named, landed on the coast of the area and in the 1820s there were occasional British posts there. However, there was only real settlement after exploring the area 20 to 30 years later.
At first, in addition to agriculture, the area was primarily interesting for fishing. In the first half of the 20th century it was coal mining, especially in the area around Wonthaggi, that advanced the area.
Today tourism dominates over 50% of the Shire's economy. Phillip Island in particular is a popular tourist destination, but the mainland beaches also attract 3.4 million visitors annually, particularly from the nearby metropolis of Melbourne. The Bass Coast is also particularly popular for holiday home owners and the population of the Shire is steadily increasing because many choose the area as their retirement home.
administration
The Bass Coast Shire Council has seven members elected by the residents of the seven wards. These seven counties are Thompson, McHaffie, Churchill on Phillip Island, and Anderson, Leadbeater, Hovell and Townsend. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
