Aldeia do Mato

Aldeia do Mato is a village and a former municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district of Abrantes in the Santarém district .

The Freguesia Aldeia do Mato had an area of ​​31.7 km² and 441 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

The municipality is located in the northeast of the district on the southern bank of the Barragem de Castelo do Bode . Neighboring communities are Souto in the northeast, São Vicente in the east, Rio de Moinhos in the south and Martinchel in the west. In the southeast, the municipal boundary also forms the boundary with the Constância district , and in the north the boundary with Tomar district .

history

The place was probably built before the 18th century. Originally the name was Aldeia da Mata and is derived from the extensive forest areas in the area. For a long time the surrounding olive groves and pine forests formed the economic basis of the place. With the construction of the Barragem de Castelo do Bode in 1951, the fields disappeared in the floods.

On September 29, 2013, the freguesias Aldeia do Mato and Souto were merged to form the new Freguesia União das Freguesias de Aldeia do Mato e Souto .
