Coordinates: 37 ° 45 ' S , 145 ° 1' O Darebin City is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . Therein belongs to the metropolis Melbourne , the capital of Victoria. The area is 51 km² and has about 146,000 inhabitants.
Darebin lies 5 to 15 km northeast of downtown Melbourne and is bounded by Darebin Creek to the east and Merri Creek to the west. It contains nine boroughs: Kingsbury, Northcote, Preston , Reservoir, Thornbury and parts of Alphington, Bundoora, Fairfield and Macleod. The City Council is based in Preston.
In the north of the city is Bundoora Park with Mount Cooper, the highest point in Melbourne's urban area. The Bundoora district is also home to the main campus of La Trobe University with 19,000 students.
The city mainly advertises with its cultural diversity: over a third of the population was not born in Australia, and over 40% can speak a language other than English. In addition to the British, Italians and Greeks in particular immigrated from Europe in the 1950s, from Asia the Chinese, Vietnamese and, most recently, more and more people from Sri Lanka, India, Egypt, the Philippines and the Middle East. However, this also means that the average income here is particularly low and there is a particularly high proportion of poor (approx. 15% earn less than AUD 15,000 per year) and old people (20% are over 60 years old).
In addition to the large residential areas, there is also a large proportion of retail in Darebin City, such as the Northland Shopping Center, the largest shopping center in North Melbourne in the Preston district. There are also larger paper and paper processing industries in the administrative area.
