South Gippsland is located on the south coast of Victoria and borders in the northeast on the Cardinia Shire of the capital of the state of Melbourne . The area includes the following localities: Bena , Buffalo, Dumbalk, Fish Creek, Foster, Koonwarra , Kongwak, Korumburra, Leongatha, Loch, Meeniyan, Mirboo North, Nyora, Poowong, Port Franklin, Port Welshpool, Sandy Point, Stony Creek, Tarwin Lower, Toora, Venus Bay, Walkerville, Waratah Bay, Welshpool and Yanakie. The southern tip of Wilsons Promontory , the so-called South Point , is the southernmost mainland point of Victoria and thus the Australian continent. The area, known for short "The Prom", is a national park on the peninsula protruding into the Bass Strait in the southeast of the Shire, which is known for its abundant wildlife.

Another landscape attraction of South Gippsland is the Agnes Falls near the coastal town of Toora, at 59 m the highest waterfalls in the state.

The hilly meadow landscape of the southern Gippsland , which characterizes the region, is ideal pastureland, and so dairy farming is the main source of income in the Shire. According to the company, Korumburra had the largest butter factory in the southern hemisphere in the 1950s.

From the discovery in 1872 until the middle of the 20th century, coal was also mined in the Korumburra area in the northwest. They were Victoria's first profitable coal mines. A mining museum is now located in Coal Creek .
