Coordinates: 38 ° 14 '  S , 143 ° 9'  O Corangamite Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . The area is 4407.5 km² and has about 16,100 inhabitants.

Corangamite is located on the south coast of Victoria about 190 km west of the capital Melbourne and includes the following towns: Camperdown, Terang, Cobden, Timboon, Port Campbell , Skipton, Darlington, Derrinallum, Lismore, Lake Corangamite, Glenormiston North, Noorat, Simpson, Princetown and Foxhow. The seat of the City Council is in the town of Camperdown, which has a population of around 3000, in the center of the LGA.

The Shires area was settled from the mid-19th century and used as grazing land for cattle and dairy farming. Even today, agriculture is the most important economic factor in the region alongside tourism.

For tourism, Corangamite offers some landscape attractions. The most famous attraction of the Australian south coast, the rock formation of the Twelve Apostles , is located off the coast between Port Campbell and Princetown and is part of the Port Campbell National Park . The cliff in this area is also known as the Shipwreck Coast because of the dangerous rocks, dense fog and high winds in the 19th and early 20th centuries that caused numerous ships to sink.

In the northern half of the administrative area there is a lake landscape, which also includes over 30 volcanic crater lakes . Lake Corangamite , the namesake on the eastern border of the Shire, is the largest natural lake in Victoria. Since it usually has no connection to the sea, its salinity is about three times that of sea water.

administration

The Corangamite Shire Council has seven members elected by residents of the five wards. One Councilor each comes from North, South-West, South-Central and Coastal; three are from the Central Ward. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
