Coordinates: 37 ° 34 ′  S , 143 ° 51 ′  E Ballarat City is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria around the city of Ballarat . The area is 740 km² and has about 100,000 inhabitants.

Ballarat is located about 120 km west of the capital Melbourne in the center of Victoria and includes the following villages: Coghills Creek, Ascot, Learmonth, Miners Rest, Burrumbeet, Cardigan, Ballarat , Nerrina, Mount Clear , Mount Helen, Wendouree, Alfredton, Delacombe, Brown Hill, Sebastopol and Buninyong. The seat of the City Council is in the city of Ballarat in the middle of the LGA with about 86,000 inhabitants.

Ballarat is the third largest city in Victoria and one of the largest inland cities in Australia. It owes its size on the one hand to the gold rush in the second half of the 19th century and on the other hand to the convenient location to the metropolis of Melbourne. In addition to industry in the city, there is also some agriculture in the surrounding area, mainly grain growing and livestock.

The gold rush past makes the area around Ballarat a popular tourist destination, more than a quarter of all gold finds in the state of Victoria came from here. In Buninyong, where the first gold was discovered in 1851, and other places, there are specially restored gold rush settlements and mines to visit. Ballarat's wealth has also left a remarkable Victorian cityscape. Another attraction is the inner-city Lake Wendouree, where the Olympic rowing competitions were held in 1956.
