Coordinates: 37 ° 39 ' S , 145 ° 0' O Whittlesea City is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . Whittlesea belongs to the metropolis Melbourne , the capital of Victoria. The area is 490 km² and has about 200,000 inhabitants.
Whittlesea is located on the northern edge of Melbourne 17 to 41 km north of the city center and contains 12 districts: Bundoora, Doreen, Eden Park, Epping, Lalor, Mernda, Mill Park, South Morang, Thomastown, Whittlesea, Wollert and Yan Yean. The City Council is located in South Morang.
Over half of the city's residents are from non-English speaking countries, many of them from southern Europe. Whittlesea forms the transition from the urban area to rural Victoria in the north.
The 560 hectare Yan Yean Reservoir was the first reservoir in 1853 that was created to secure the water supply.

The Whittlesea City Council has nine members elected by the residents of the three wards (three councilors per ward). These three districts (North, East and West) are determined independently of the districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
