Coordinates: 37 ° 50 '  S , 145 ° 4'  O Boroondara City is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . Boroondara belongs to the metropolis Melbourne , the capital of Victoria. The area is 60 km² and has about 160,000 inhabitants.

Boroondara is 5 to 14 km east of Melbourne city center and contains 12 neighborhoods: Ashburton , Balwyn , Balwyn North , Camberwell, Canterbury , Hawthorn , Hawthorn East, Kew , Kew East and parts of Glen Iris, Mont Albert and Surrey Hills. The western border of the city is the Yarra River . The City Council is based in Camberwell.

The name Boroondara means "shady dense land" in the language of the local indigenous people and indicates the area's wooded past. The first Europeans settled there in 1837. Today, in addition to parks, the city has large residential areas and some of Melbourne's most expensive and exclusive residential areas, e.g. B. in the boroughs of Canterbury and Kew.

Boroondara is an education center in Melbourne. It has the highest density of private schools in the world. There are also five libraries in Boroondara.

Australian comedian and Dame Edna actor Barry Humphries was born and raised in the Camberwell neighborhood.

The Boroondara City Council has ten members who are elected by the residents of the ten wards. These ten districts (Bellevue, Maranoa, Maling, Lynden, Solway, Gardiner, Studley, Cotham, Junction and Glenferrie) are defined independently of the districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
