Balwyn is a district of the Australian city of Melbourne . It is located about ten kilometers east of the city center.

history

In 1841 Henry Elgar bought land from the English Crown in what is now Balwyn and leased it to small farms. In the late 1850s, journalist Andrew Murray bought land in the area and named his house Balwyn ("house of wine", from Gaelic bal , "house", and Old Saxon "wyn", wine). The house was on what is now the Fintona Girls' School .

The first school opened in Balwyn in 1868 and a post office in 1874. In 1891 a rail link to Melbourne was established, which was closed in 1927. From 1913 Balwyn was connected to the tram network.
