Kew

Kew is a district of the Australian city of Melbourne . It is located 6 km east of the city center and is one of the most populous with over 24,000 inhabitants.

history

The history of the district began with the commissioning of a water mill on the Yarra River in 1840. In 1851 the English crown put the area of ​​today's Kew up for sale. One of the buyers, Nicholas Fenwick , built roads, divided the property and named it after the London borough of Kew . The new district soon became popular among members of the upper class. Shops and several churches were established. Between 1910 and World War II , the population of Kew tripled.

From 1921 to 1994 Kew formed its own Local Government Area , after which it was attached to the City of Boroondara .
