Manningham is located 15 to 35 km east of Melbourne city center between the Yarra River in the north and Koonung Creek in the south and contains ten neighborhoods: Bulleen, Doncaster , Doncaster East, Park Orchards, Templestowe, Templestowe Lower, Warrandyte , Warrandyte South and Wonga Park. Gold was first found in Victoria at Anderson's Creek in what is now Warrandyte in 1851, marking the start of the great gold rush in the mid-19th century.

In the 1860s and 1870s, many German emigrants settled in Waldau. During the First World War, most of the German place names were abolished, and Waldau is now called Doncaster.

Doncaster East, an extension of downtown Chinatown, is home to a larger community of Chinese people.
