The Koonung Creek or Koonung Koonung Creek is a creek in the Australian state of Victoria .

It rises on the border of the Nunawading and Dovale districts , 21 km east of Melbourne city ​​center, near Springvale Road . From there the creek flows 10.9 km in a westerly direction to the confluence between Ivanhoe East , Bulleen and Balwyn North in the Yarra River below the Yarra Flats in the south of Bulleen.

Tributaries

In its course, the Koonung Creek in Elgar Park in Mont Albert North takes on the Bushy Creek , which today runs underground in a pipe.

Around 90,000 people live in the catchment area of ​​the creek. Most of the settlements are urban extensions along the Koonung Creek Valley, but Doncaster and Balwyn North are not.

Water quality

Melbourne Water rates the condition of the creek as “very bad”. According to the agency, Koonung Creek is the most polluted flowing water in Melbourne. The measuring station in Bulleen registered an average infestation with E. coli bacteria of 1800; this is nine times what is permissible for a body of water suitable for swimming and also the highest concentration measured in a flowing water in Melbourne. Koonung Creek has been in this poor condition since the beginning of European settlement.

Still, five types of frogs can be found in the stream (Common Eastern Froglet, Spotted Marsh Frog, Striped Marsh Frog, Eastern Banjo Frog, and Brown Tree Frog).
