Coordinates: 38 ° 5 ′  S , 145 ° 29 ′  O Cardinia Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . Cardinia is part of the Outer Metropolitan Area of Melbourne , the outer metropolitan area of ​​the capital of Victoria. The area is 1280 km² and has about 94,000 inhabitants.

Cardinia is 47 to 83 km from the city center at the southeast end of Melbourne on Western Port Bay and contains 21 neighborhoods and towns: Beaconsfield , Beaconsfield Upper, Beenak, Bunyip, Cardinia, Clematis, Cockatoo, Cory Lynn, Dewhurst, Emerald, Garfield, Gembrook , Koo Wee Rup , Lang Lang , Maryknoll, Nar Nar Goon, Officer, Pakenham, Rythdale, Tonimbuk and Tynong. The City Council is based in Pakenham .

Cardinia is a transition area between the districts belonging to the Greater Metropolitan Area and the rural suburbs of the city. It is one of the predominantly agricultural regions, besides growing fruit and vegetables, it is mainly cattle breeding. The area around Lang Lang and Koo Wee Rup is a center of asparagus cultivation .

The historic railway line of the steam locomotive Puffing Billy runs through the north of the Shire from Gembrook via Cockatoo, Lakeside and Emerald , the last remaining tourist attraction of four railway lines which connected the rural areas with the inner city network of Melbourne. The 24 km route begins in Belgrave in the Yarra Ranges .

In Emerald there is also the largest model railroad in Australia. The H0 -bahn has 2000 m of track.

The Cardinia Shire Council has seven members elected by the residents of the four wards (three Councilors from Central, two from Ranges, and one each from Bunyip and Port Ward). These four districts are determined independently of the districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
