Coordinates: 37 ° 36 '  S , 144 ° 15'  O Moorabool Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . The area is 2110.6 km² and has about 32,000 inhabitants.

Moorabool is located in the center of Victoria and borders the capital Melbourne to the east . The area includes: Barkstead, Leigh Creek, Pootilla, Bungaree, Millbrook, Yendon, Clarendon, Beremboke, Spargo Creek, Blackwood, Gordon, Greendale, Mount Egerton, Ballan, Ingliston, Bungalows, Mount Wallace, Darley, Bacchus Marsh, Maddingley and Rowsley. The seat of the City Council is in the town of Ballan, which has around 2300 inhabitants, in the center of the LGA. The largest city of the Shires is Bacchus Marsh in the east with about 17,000 inhabitants.

The area is one of the earliest sheep farming settlements in Victoria after the colony was established in Port Phillip Bay. Around 1836/38 the first flocks of sheep spread along the Moorabool River. In the 1850s, the gold rush led to the influx of settlers, especially since the Shire lies between Melbourne and the gold fields of Ballarat .

From then until today, Moorabool is primarily an agricultural region. However, around 40% of the Shire's workers are employed in the neighboring city of Melbourne.

The Moorabool Shire Council has seven members elected by residents of the four wards. Of these four districts, Bungalows, West Moorabool and Woodlands each have one, and East Moorabool four councilors. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
