Coordinates: 37 ° 51 '  S , 144 ° 54'  O Hobson Bay City is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . Hobsons Bay is part of the metropolis Melbourne , the capital of Victoria. The area is 64 km² and has about 88,000 inhabitants. It is named after Hobsons Bay .

Hobsons Bay lies on the northern edge of Port Phillip Bay and borders Melbourne City to the east . It contains seven districts: Altona , Altona Meadows , Altona North , Newprot, Seabrook, Seaholme, South Kingsville, Spotswood , Williamstown , Williamstown North and parts of Brooklyn and Laverton. The City Council is based in Altona.

Sheep and cattle farmers settled in what is now Williamstown as early as 1835, and the first larger settlement was established here by 1850. At the beginning of the 20th century there were also coal mines in Altona until cheaper mining areas were found in other parts of Victoria.

The administrative area is now in the industrial center of Melbourne and some of the state's large corporations have settled here. In addition to oil refineries and chemical companies, there are also larger companies in the field of transport accessories and vehicle construction.

There is a naval shipyard in Williamstown and an air force base in Laverton.

In addition, Hobsons Bay also has 20 km of beaches and attractive river and lake areas with Altona Beach.

The city has a twinning with the Japanese city of Anjō .

Tennis player Mark Philippoussis was born and raised in Williamstown.

The Hobsons Bay City Council has seven members elected by the residents of the seven wards. These seven districts (Altona, Altona North, Altona Meadows, Seabrook, Spotswood, Williamstown and Williamstown North) are determined independently of the districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
