Hobsons Bay is a bay in front of the Australian metropolis Melbourne . It is part of Port Phillip and is believed to have been named after William Hobson , an explorer and first governor of the British colony of New Zealand , who created the first map of the bay in 1836.
It is also namesake of the administrative district ( Local Government Area ) Hobson's Bay City .
