Coordinates: 38 ° 9 '  S , 145 ° 8'  O Frankston City is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . Frankston belongs to the metropolis Melbourne , the capital of Victoria. The area is 131 km² and has about 130,000 inhabitants.

Frankston is 40 to 50 km southeast of downtown Melbourne on the eastern edge of Port Phillip Bay in the north of the Mornington Peninsula . It contains seven neighborhoods: Carrum Downs , Frankston, Frankston North, Frankston South, Langwarrin, Seaford, and Skye. The seat of the City Council is in Frankston in the west of the LGA.

The north of the area used to be marshland that was drained for agriculture. What is left of this is a 305 hectare protected area, the Seaford Wetlands, which are known for their diversity of birds. While the north is flat, the land rises to the south towards Mount Eliza.

Today the city is a commercial and service center of the southeast of Melbourne. Frankston has two major shopping centers and several shopping streets.

In the Carrum Downs district is the Shiva Vishnu Temple, the largest Hindu temple in Victoria.

Frankston is twinned with the Japanese city of Susono .
