Carrum Downs is a district of the Australian metropolis Melbourne . It is located about 34 km southeast of the city center and had about 20,700 inhabitants in 2016.

history

Before the arrival of the Europeans, the area was inhabited by Aborigines , who they called Karrum Karrum ( boomerang ). The name probably refers to the narrow strip of sand that looks like a boomerang when viewed from Oliver's Hill. At that time the area consisted mainly of swampy marshland .

TE Rawlinson toured the area from 1865-66. The only European settlement that he noted was a fisherman's hut in what is now Aspendale . As early as December 1865, the land was sold to several investors in a first auction in Melbourne. Primarily only the fishing village of Mordialloc developed at first , also because the governor's administration held back and did not want to provide convicts for the draining of the swamp.

In 1909 the Carrum Downs Post Office opened. During the Great Depression, the Brotherhood of St. Laurence, a non-profit organization, ran a facility to help needy families in the area. After the end of the Second World War , the district was initially to be converted into a kind of Sun City , i.e. a settlement for senior citizens.

The area was redeveloped in the 1980s and 1990s. Lots of families moved to the area because of the low prices and proximity to Frankston .
