Aspendale is a district in the southeast of the Australian metropolis Melbourne .
history
Before it was settled by Europeans in the 19th century, the area was inhabited by Aborigines from the Bunurong tribe. At that time the area consisted of swamps, from which large sand dunes protruded on the coast. The whites drained most of the area and cleared the sand dunes to reclaim land.
A horse racing track opened in the area in the 1870s. The owner named it after one of his horses, Aspen , in Aspendale Park Racecourse , from which the current name of the district comes. The racetrack was closed in the 1920s. Even today, several streets are named after racehorses.
The district developed from the 1960s when many new residential buildings were built. Today it is almost exclusively characterized by residential areas.
