Coordinates: 38 ° 10 ′ S , 145 ° 57 ′ E Baw Baw Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . The area is 4027.6 km² and has about 48,500 inhabitants.
Baw Baw is located in the eastern half of Victoria and borders the capital Melbourne to the west . The area includes: Longwarry, Drouin, Warragul , Darnum, Yarragon, Trafalgar, Neerim South, Noojee, Thorpdale, Rawson and Erica . The seat of the City Council is in Warragul in the southwest of the LGA with about 14,300 inhabitants.
The Shire is named after the 1564 m high Mount Baw Baw, where the smallest of Victoria's ski areas is located. The foothills of the Great Dividing Range characterize the north of the region, while the hilly and more densely populated south is part of the agricultural Gippsland . One of the attractions of the Shire is the historic gold rush town of Walhalla with one of the most profitable gold mines of the gold rush, the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine .

The Baw Baw Shire Council has nine members who are elected by the residents of the nine wards. These nine boroughs are Bloomfield, Drouin, Lardner, Longwarry, Mount Worth, Tarago, Thomson, Warragul East, and Warragul West. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
