Coordinates: 36 ° 15 ' S , 142 ° 25' O Yarriambiack Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . The area is 7,325.8 km² and has about 6,700 inhabitants.
Yarriambiack is located in northwest Victoria about 330 km northwest of the capital Melbourne . The area includes: Beulah, Brim, Hopetoun, Lascelles, Minyip , Murtoa, Patchewollock, Rupanyup, Speed, Tempy, Turriff, Warracknabeal, Woomelang and Yaapeet. The City Council is located in Warracknabeal in the southern half of the LGA, a city with around 2,300 inhabitants.
The first settlers were sheep farmers from 1845 who settled here with large herds. Because of the warm, dry climate, it took some irrigation systems in place before agriculture became widespread. A rabbit plague also ravaged the area in the 1880s. Between the Murray River and the border with South Australia , a rabbit fence was built along the 36th parallel, which led through the Shire and was still partially preserved as a memorial.
The Shire is now the center of the wheat belt (Wheat Belt) from Victoria and agriculture and especially the cultivation of grain determines the economy of the region.
administration
The Yarriambiack Shire Council has seven members who are elected by the residents of the three wards. Of these three districts, Dunmunkle and Hopetoun have two councilors each, and Warracknabeal three councilors. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
