The Moto2 class is the second highest prototype racing class within the FIM - Motorcycle World Championship of Road Racing .

For the 2010 season, Moto2 replaced the 250 cc class, which had existed since 1949 , as the second highest category within the motorcycle world championship, and since the 2019 season has been specifying four-stroke engines with 3 cylinders and 765 cc displacement from Triumph .

Regulations

The regulations for the successor series of the 250 cc Moto2 World Championship were published on December 15, 2008 by the FIM.

background

The Moto2 series was a response to the steadily increasing cubic capacity of road machines and the disappearance of the two-stroke engines over the last few decades . A change was urgently required. The new regulations should also limit the costs for the racing teams, which were previously very high due to the use of exotic materials.

engine

In contrast to the production-based superbike racing series, only standard engines are permitted in the Moto2 class. The engines achieve a maximum output of 100 kW (136 hp) and maximum speeds of 18,000 rpm. Pneumatic valve control , oval pistons and carbon brakes are no longer permitted. The teams are obliged to use the electronic engine control ( ECU ) and fuel injection prescribed by the FIM . The petrol has a knock resistance of 100 RON .

From 2010 to 2018 Honda (series engine of the Honda CBR 600 ) was a supplier. There were four-cylinder four-stroke - naturally aspirated engines used cc with a cylinder capacity of 600th Triumph has been supplying the engines since the 2019 season , currently with 3 cylinders and 765 cc. The ECUs are supplied by a manufacturer specified by the FIM. Inlet and outlet valves must be made from conventional materials. A variable valve timing is not permitted. The minimum weight for the motors is 53 kg.

Each rider only has one motorcycle available per race weekend. Two complete engines are allowed for each weekend. These are provided with serial numbers so that they can be checked by the race management. A system for data recording is provided for all teams by a unit manufacturer. ECU and fuel are provided by the Moto2 organizers.

transmission

A maximum of six gear ratios are permitted. A maximum of three alternative settings are permitted per gear ratio, but only two for the main gear ratio. The teams must provide precise information about their gear ratios before the season. Automatic electro-mechanical or electro-hydraulic clutch systems are not permitted.

landing gear

The chassis is still a prototype . The implementation is free within the given guidelines, through the technical regulations of the FIM Grand Prix . However, the frame, swing arm, seat, tank and trim parts may not be used by series machines. The minimum weight for the machines was initially 135 kg. This rule was changed with the 2013 season, since then the minimum weight for driver and machine has been 215 kg.

The tires will be supplied exclusively by Dunlop after an approval of the tire choice had initially been discussed.

Approved materials

The following parts must be made of steel alloys : springs for the valves, camshaft , crankshaft , connecting rods , piston pins , brake discs . The following parts must be made of aluminum alloys : engine housing and cylinder heads ( cast ), pistons.

Point system

The world champion will be the driver or manufacturer who has accumulated the most points in the world championship by the end of the season. When distributing points, the placements are taken into account in the overall result of the respective race. The top fifteen drivers in each race receive points according to the following scheme:

Distribution of points
space 1 2 3 4th 5 6th 7th 8th 9 10 11 12 13 14th 15th
Points 25th 20th 16 13 11 10 9 8th 7th 6th 5 4th 3 2 1

All of the results achieved by a driver are counted towards the driver rating. For the constructors' classification, the best result of a driver of the respective brand counts; all points scored by the drivers of a team are included in the team classification.
