Canadian Grand Prix (motorcycle)
The Canadian Grand Prix for Motorcycles was a motorcycle race for the motorcycle world championship .
It took place only once, on September 30, 1967 in Mosport Park near Bowmanville , Ontario . Due to the late date of the event, the Grand Prix was characterized by extremely low temperatures for motorcycle races.
In the 125 cc class, Bill Ivy was just one factory driver. The Briton won the race despite problems with the cooling of his Yamaha sovereign.
In the 250cc race, Mike Hailwood on a Honda led the race from the start ahead of the two Yamaha factory riders Bill Ivy and Phil Read , who got off to a bad start. In the last round Ivy Read let pass so as not to take away any points in the championship fight with Hailwood. Hailwood and Read, who did not start in the quarter-liter class at the next, last World Cup run of the season in Japan, found themselves with 50 points each in the overall standings. Although the Yamaha rider had 56 points net, two points more than the Honda factory rider, Hailwood had one more win than Read and was therefore declared the 250 cc world champion.
The run of the half-liter class was shortened by ten laps by the organizer because of the cold. Giacomo Agostini ( MV Agusta ) was satisfied with letting Mike Hailwood pull his Honda and secured important championship points with second place. Third place went to local hero Mike Duff on Matchless . After the race, which was the last in the 500cc category of the year, Agostini and Hailwood were tied for 46 points in the overall standings. Agostini had six points more than Hailwood including the deleted results and also a second place more on his account. The Italian secured the second of a total of 15 World Cup titles in his career.
