Marco Melandri (born August 7, 1982 in Ravenna , Emilia-Romagna , Italy ) is a former Italian motorcycle racer .

In 2002 he was world champion in the 250 cm³ class of the motorcycle world championship on Aprilia . From 2011 to 2014 he was active in the FIM - Superbike World Championship .

Career

Motorcycle world championship

Marco Melandri started in 1997 for the first time in the 125 cm³ class of the motorcycle world championship and won the Dutch TT in his debut season . In the 2002 season , Melandri won the world championship title in the 250 cc class on Aprilia at the age of 20 as the youngest driver in history at the time.

For the 2003 season he moved to Yamaha in the MotoGP class . In the first race of the season he broke his leg in a serious accident and was out for a few runs. The following season was not very successful either.

Melandri started the 2005 season for the team of former world champion Fausto Gresini on a Honda. He was able to win the last two races of the season and thus secured the runner-up world championship. In the 2006 season he was able to win the Grand Prix in Turkey , France and Australia with the same team and thus secure fourth place in the world championship. In 2007 Marco Melandri also competed for the Gresini team in the MotoGP class and finished the season in fifth place with three podium places.

In the 2008 season , Melandri started for the Ducati factory team , and in the 2009 season he started for Kawasaki after agreeing with Ducati to terminate his two-year contract, which ran until the end of 2009, before the summer break.

In his 215 starts in the motorcycle world championship , Marco Melandri achieved 22 wins , 62 podium places, nine pole positions and 16 fastest race laps .

Superbike World Championship

For the 2011 season Marco Melandri switched to the Yamaha World Superbike Team in the FIM - Superbike World Championship . He started alongside the Irishman Eugene Laverty and replaced Cal Crutchlow , who had switched to Team Tech 3 in the MotoGP class. The Italian achieved four race wins and a total of 15 podium positions in 26 races and was runner-up behind Carlos Checa .

After Yamaha gave up his involvement in the Superbike World Championship at the end of the 2011 season, Melandri joined the 2012 season for BMW - factory team , where he is a driver pairing with the Brits Leon Haslam made. The Italian won six races and was third behind Max Biaggi (Aprilia) and Tom Sykes (Kawasaki). A better ranking prevented a total of six retirements in 25 races. After BMW closed its works team at the end of the season and left official representation in the Superbike World Championship to the Italian BMW importer, Melandri stayed with the manufacturer in 2013 and switched to the BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK team . There he again rode an S 1000 RR alongside Chaz Davies . With fourth place in the World Championship, Melandri was again the best BMW driver.

Marco Melandri was a works driver for Aprilia in 2014 . There he replaced his former Yamaha teammate Eugene Laverty .

After four years in the Superbike World Championship, Melandri should be back in the Motorcycle World Championship for the Aprilia Gresini team from the 2015 season . After only eight races Aprilia ended the cooperation with him by mutual agreement.

At the end of July 2016, the Aruba.it Racing-Ducati team announced that Marco Melandri will replace his compatriot Davide Giugliano from 2017 . He drove alongside Chaz Davies and finished fourth with one win.

In 2018, Melandri won the first two races in Australia, but only finished fifth at the end of the season.

In 2019, the Italian moved to the private GRT Yamaha team and finished ninth in the World Championship with three third places.
