useful information
General
The races in Portugal ( Portimão ) returned for the 2017 season.
Rule changes
The starting grid for the second race was determined by the Superpole up to position 10 . The first nine places were determined by the result from the first race. The top three drivers were on the third row of the grid. Places 1 and 3 have been swapped. In the second row of the grid, the drivers were in positions 7, 8 and 9. The first row was made up of the drivers in positions 4, 5 and 6.
Ride-by-wire was only permitted if the street-legal model also had it.
After the event in Aragon, the following changes were decided:
Drivers who were outside the 107 percent after the free practice sessions were still allowed to take part in the warm-up . If they achieved a time within 107 percent, they were qualified for the race and could start from the back row.
In addition to motor scooters , electric bicycles have now also been banned from walking on the route .
Analogous to the motorcycle world championship , the penalty points have also been abolished for the superbike world championship.
driver
Leandro Mercado was injured during training drives and suffered a pneumothorax . Because of this, the doctors forbade him to fly on an airplane. For this reason, he cannot take part in the first event of the season in Australia.
The doctors decided that the Italian Lorenzo Savadori was not allowed to take part in the European opener in Motorland Aragón after a crash in the second run on the Chang International Circuit . He was represented by the Spaniard Julián Simón , who made his debut in the Superbike World Championship. He had contested the Qatar Grand Prix in Moto2 just a weekend before .
In Superpole 1 , at the event in Aragon, the Czech Ondřej Ježek fell. In the process, he suffered a concussion . For this reason, he did not receive any approval from the doctors for the two races.
One week after the event in Aragon, the Althea BMW Racing Team announced that they had mutually separated from the German Markus Reiterberger . The reason given was Reiterberger's fall in the second run in Misano from the previous year . From the fourth event in Assen , the Italian Raffaele De Rosa replaced him as a regular driver. At the event in Germany at the Lausitzring , Reiterberger entered with a wildcard .
Nicky Hayden was involved in a traffic accident three days after the Imola event . A car caught him while he was out on his racing bike . His team announced that his place will not be occupied by a replacement driver for the time being. He succumbed to his injuries on May 22, 2017. His compatriot Jacob Gagne replaced him at the event at the Laguna Seca Raceway .
With the victory in the second round of the last event of this season in Qatar , Jonathan Rea achieved a new total points record with 556 points. Before that, since 2002 the American Colin Edwards had this with 552 points.
