Stefan Bradl (born November 29, 1989 in Augsburg ) is a German motorcycle racer .

In 2011 Bradl became world champion in the Moto2 class. Before winning the 2011 World Championship, his greatest successes were winning the International German Motorcycle Championship 2005 and the Spanish Motorcycle Championship 2007 in the 125 cc class. His best placement in the MotoGP class came in 2013 when he finished second at the US Grand Prix in Laguna Seca .

Career

125 cc World Championship

Stefan Bradl became the KTM - factory driver in 2005 the title in the 125cc class of the International German Motorcycle Championship . He won three of the eight races and was one point ahead of his Austrian team-mate Michael Ranseder in the final standings . At the same time, the 15-year-old competed in his first two world championship races at the Grand Prix of Catalonia and Germany .

In the 2006 season Bradl competed in the entire 125 cc World Championship for the KTM Junior Team , which was led by Dieter Stappert . The only countable result was eleventh place at the Czech Grand Prix in Brno . At the end of the season he was fired from KTM because a second year in the team was contractually linked to a placement in the top 15 in the world championship. Stefan Bradl was, also due to injuries, with four world championship points but only 26th overall.

In the 2007 season , Stefan Bradl was to compete for the Spanish Repsol Honda team of former Grand Prix driver Alberto Puig on a Honda factory machine. However, on February 14, 2007, at the age of only 17, he surprisingly announced his retirement from active racing. The trigger for the decision was, among other things, the fact that Bradl should have stayed in Spain for seven weeks to prepare for the season. Later, however, he decided to continue his career and signed a contract with the Blusens Aprilia team, for which he initially only contested the Spanish 125 cc championship. After a race victory on the Circuit de Catalunya , he also took part as a wildcard driver in the world championship run for the Grand Prix of Catalonia on this route and finished ninth. After further wildcard appearances in the Netherlands and at the Sachsenring , where he finished in the points, Stefan Bradl was allowed to start as a regular driver in the last six world championship races of the season. His best result of the year was finally sixth place at the Portuguese Grand Prix . In the overall world championship ranking, he finished 18th with only nine of 17 races contested. In the Spanish championship, Bradl secured the title with two wins and eight points ahead of his British team-mate Scott Redding .

In August 2007, Stefan Bradl signed a contract with the German team Kiefer for the 2008 season on an Aprilia in the 125 cc World Championship. At the Grand Prix of Qatar he achieved his first podium in the motorcycle world championship with third place. Bradl finished second at the German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring, and the Zahlinger celebrated his first Grand Prix victory at the following Czech Grand Prix. Bradl became the first German winner in the motorcycle world championship since Steve Jenkner in 2003 . At the Japanese Grand Prix in Motegi Bradl achieved his second victory, at the following Australian Grand Prix he set a new absolute speed record for the class up to 125 cc, which has existed since 1949 , in training with a top speed of 245.9  km / h .

After a less than successful season in 2009 , in which Bradl finished in tenth place in the world championship with two fourth places as the best individual result, the decision was made together with the Kiefer team to advance to the newly founded Moto2 class. The Swiss manufacturer Suter acted as the chassis supplier .

After difficulties preparing for the season, Bradl managed to finish third in the first race of the season in Qatar, but retired on the first lap after a collision with Alex De Angelis . In the course of the season Bradl showed ever stronger performances and crowned the year with his first Moto2 victory in Estoril, Portugal .

In winter 2011, the team decided to use a chassis from the German manufacturer Kalex Engineering . The test drives for the 2011 season were very promising for Bradl. The Bavarian won the very first race in Qatar with a start-to-finish victory. In the fifth race, the Grand Prix of Catalonia, Stefan Bradl was able to secure the fifth pole position in a row and drove to his third win of the season. In the second half of the season, Bradl's rival Marc Márquez gained strength and took the lead in the overall standings for the first time three races before the end of the season. In the following two races, however, Stefan Bradl was able to regain the lead and gain a cushion of 23 points before the final run in Valencia . Since Marquez could not compete in Sepang and Valencia due to injury, Bradl became the second Moto2 world champion .

MotoGP class

For the 2012 season , Stefan Bradl was signed to the Italian LCR team of former driver Lucio Cecchinello , where he will drive a Honda RC213V . He got along better and better with this motorcycle over the course of the year and secured his best result of the season with fourth place at the Italian GP. In the final bill, Bradl took eighth place with 135 points.

In 2013 Bradl starts again on a Honda in the LCR team. At the Dutch TT in Assen 2013 he was able to qualify for the first time in his MotoGP career by finishing third on the front row. He drove his first lead kilometers in MotoGP on the Sachsenring . At the US Grand Prix in Laguna Seca he secured his first pole position in MotoGP after having driven 26 Grand Prix races. In the race, he drove the first 18 laps as the leader before he was overtaken by the eventual winner Marc Márquez . His second place was the first place on the podium in his 27th MotoGP race. In mid-August 2013, his contract with LCR-Honda was extended for the 2014 season. During the last free practice session of the Malaysian GP, he broke his right ankle and had to undergo an operation. Therefore he could not start in the following races in Malaysia and Australia .

In 2014 Bradl started again on a Honda in the LCR team. At the Grand Prix of Qatar, he retired early after falling in the lead. In the next race, the Texas Grand Prix, Bradl finished fourth.

In 2015 Bradl started for Team Athinà Forward Racing , on a Yamaha. The performances shown in the LCR Honda were not enough for the Japanese engine plant, so his time at LCR Honda ended after three years with the end of the 2014 season. LCR team boss Lucio Cecchinello would have liked to keep Bradl, even found a private financier to meet Honda’s condition to fulfill the further obligation. However, Bradl had already signed with Yamaha at this point. British Cal Crutchlow has taken over his cockpit .

Bradl had a highsider during the race at Assen and crashed. He broke his right scaphoid bone . He had an operation on the Monday after the race. As a result of this injury, he was unable to take part in his home race in Germany . Claudio Corti replaced him . Due to the arrest of Forward Racing team owner Giovanni Cuzari and the uncertain future of the team, Bradl canceled his contract on July 29, 2015. Looking for a new employer, Bradl has been under contract with the Aprilia Gresini team since August 1st, 2015. His new racing motorcycle there is the Aprilia RS-GP .

Bradl also drove in the Aprilia factory team in 2016 . His teammate was still the Spaniard Álvaro Bautista . The season was not very successful for both drivers and Aprilia announced the new driver pairing for 2017 with the Spaniard Aleix Espargaro and the British Sam Lowes at an early stage .

Superbike World Championship

After twelve years in the motorcycle world championship, Stefan Bradl switched to the FIM - Superbike world championship from the 2017 season . There he drives a CBR 1000 SP in the Honda factory team . His teammate was the American Nicky Hayden .

Personal

Stefan Bradl is the son of the 250 cc vice world champion from 1991 , Helmut Bradl and his wife Gisela.
