The 1977 motorcycle world championship season was the 29th in the history of the FIM - motorcycle road world championship .
Were in the class 500 cc eleven cc in the classes to 350 cc to 250 cc and up to 125 twelve and in the category up to 50 cm and in the sidecars held seven races.

useful information
- The constructors' world championship titles were awarded to the manufacturer who provided the driver’s world championship in the respective class. For the sidecar, only the engine manufacturer, Yamaha, got the title.
- For the first time in the history of the motorcycle world championship, the Tourist Trophy on the Isle of Man was no longer an official world championship race. It was replaced by the Grand Prix of Great Britain , which was held for the first time and took place at the Silverstone Circuit .
- The 350 cc race for the Austrian Grand Prix was abandoned and canceled after a serious accident in the middle of the race. Franco Uncini and Johnny Cecotto had collided and littered the track with debris. The following riders fell and caused a mass accident. The Swiss Hans Stadelmann died on the spot, Dieter Braun had to end his career due to an injury and Johnny Cecotto and Patrick Fernandez had to take a break for weeks.
- After the accident in Austria, Morbidelli's factory driver Paolo Pileri had to take a break, his substitute Mario Lega , who had started the season as a private driver, won the world title in the 250 cc class.
- At the end of the season, Giacomo Agostini ended his motorcycle world championship career after 15 world championship titles and 122 Grand Prix victories .
Deaths
- The Swiss Hans Stadelmann was killed in an accident in the 350cc race in Austria.
- Giovanni Ziggiotto fell in the 250 cc race for the Grand Prix of Yugoslavia and was run over by the following Per-Edvard Carlsson . The Italian died eleven days later in a hospital in Rijeka.
- Ulrich Graf from Switzerland was killed at the same Grand Prix in the 50cc class. After falling into a post, he was dead on the spot.
