Scoring
space 1 2 3 4th 5 6th 7th 8th 9 10
Points 15th 12 10 8th 6th 5 4th 3 2 1

The three best results achieved in each half of the season were considered.

useful information

  • For the first time in the history of the motorcycle world championship, there were no works teams at the start in the 500 cm³ class.
  • The German Grand Prix was originally supposed to be held on the Südschleife , as it was last in 1968 . Since the necessary work to improve the track was not carried out, the race took place again on the Nordschleife , which was considered dangerous , but which, unlike the Südschleife, had been rebuilt in 1970/71. The foreign motorcycle world championship pilots had already boycotted the Nordschleife Grand Prix in 1974 because of adapting the route safety to Eifelrennen automobile races , and four weeks earlier the Austrian Niki Lauda had had a serious accident in the Formula 1 GP.
  • Giacomo Agostini achieved his 122nd and last victory in the motorcycle world championship in the 500 cc class on the Nürburgring - Nordschleife , the location of his first Grand Prix victory (although at that time on the Südschleife ) . This mark is unmatched to this day. Only Valentino Rossi and Agostini managed to break the magical limit of 100 Grand Prix victories and is currently holding 106 victories. The victory is also the last of a four-stroke engine in the 500 cc class held until 2002 .

Deaths

  • The two local drivers Paolo Tordi and Otello Buscherini were killed at the Nations Grand Prix on the race track in Mugello, which is on the calendar for the first time . Tordi fell in the 350 cc run, Buscherini in the 250 cc race, both died on the way to the hospital.
  • The Isle of Man TT also claimed two lives that year. Walter Wörner, Siegfried Maier's passenger in the sidecar class and the Australian Les Kenny , in the lightweight TT race , were killed.
